Record-Breaking Heatwave Sweeps Across Southern Europe

Countries across Southern Europe are experiencing unprecedented temperatures, with several regions recording their highest temperatures ever.
The heatwave, which meteorologists have named "Cerberus" after the multi-headed dog from Greek mythology, has seen temperatures exceed 45°C (113°F) in parts of Italy, Greece, and Spain.
"What we're witnessing is consistent with climate change projections," said Dr. Amara Diallo, climate scientist at the European Weather Institute. "These extreme heat events are becoming more frequent and more intense."
The impacts of the heatwave include:
- Health authorities reporting a 30% increase in hospital admissions for heat-related conditions
- Wildfires breaking out in forested areas, particularly in Greece and Portugal
- Agricultural losses estimated at over €500 million due to crop damage
- Tourism disruption as popular destinations become dangerously hot
Authorities have implemented emergency measures, including:
- Opening air-conditioned cooling centers in major cities
- Restricting outdoor work during peak heat hours
- Distributing water in tourist areas and to vulnerable populations
- Implementing rolling power outages to manage strain on electrical grids
The heatwave is expected to persist for at least another week before temperatures begin to moderate.
Scientists warn that without significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, such extreme heat events could become the norm during summer months in Southern Europe by mid-century.
