In a bold move against the trend of sequels and reboots, Paramount Pictures has unveiled plans for twelve original films over the next two years.
The announcement, made by studio chief David Chen at the annual industry showcase in Los Angeles, represents one of the largest commitments to original content by a major studio in recent years.
"We believe audiences are hungry for fresh stories and new voices," Chen said. "While franchises will always have their place, we're betting big on originality."
The slate includes:
- Four original dramas from acclaimed directors including Ava DuVernay and Denis Villeneuve
- Three high-concept science fiction films
- Two comedies from the producers of "Bridesmaids"
- Three thrillers, including one based on a bestselling novel
The studio has committed over $800 million to the initiative, with budgets ranging from $20 million for smaller projects to $150 million for tentpole productions.
Industry analysts have offered mixed reactions to the announcement.
"It's refreshing to see this commitment to original storytelling," said film critic Rebecca Wong. "But it's also a significant financial risk in an era when audiences have shown a preference for familiar IP."
The first of these original films, a psychological thriller directed by Jordan Peele, is scheduled for release in March of next year.
